As a leading company in the field of hydrodynamics, CFD, and naval architecture we invest heavily in research and development. Some of our research projects are realised by interns or graduate students.

Recent examples of student projects are:

  • The application of sails as a means of propulsion for an 80m cargo vessel
  • Research into the application of the Hull Vane on a container vessel
  • Fully automated optimisation of the aft-body of ships by means of CFD
  • Development of a new fishing vessel concept for South-East Asia
  • Application of the Hull Vane for a new high-speed vessel concept

Julian Hofman: ”The true beauty of a ship is below the surface”

 

Julian is studying Maritime Technology and is particularly interested in the physic laws applied on the hull below and above the surface. During his internship at Van Oossanen, he focuses on developing the Hull Vane® for small motor yachts. He found out that a ‘simple’ innovation like the Hull Vane®, can have a big impact in on hull efficiency. As the Hull Vane® can be applied on a wide range of vessels, he sees a lot of potential for the Hull Vane® in the near future.

 

Luisa Menano de Figueiredo: ''Looking at the future''

As a graduate student from Marine Technology at TU Delft, Luisa is fulfilling an internship at Van Oossanen by designing ‘the yacht of 2030’. Her goal is to bring sustainability together with yacht design.

Silvia Casella: "Both Naval Architects and Artificial Intelligence love performing boats!"

 

Silvia believes Artificial Intelligence and human creativity can design better boats together. She is working with Van Oossanen Naval Architects on her Master Thesis for the MSc in Marine Technology, Hydrodynamics track, at TU Delft. Her goal is to combine Artificial Intelligence and CFD tools to allow Naval Architects to optimise hull shapes from a resistance point of view. The automatic routine she built during her internship will perfectly suit the purpose!
